About St. John's Dribble for the Cure

St. John's Dribble for the Cure - Dribble On Come meet the Red Storm men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with head Coach Mullin and Coach Tartamella, at St. John’s University on September 24, 2016 for the 6th Annual Dribble for the Cure!

We are committed to raising awareness and dollars to help save the lives of children battling cancer - last year's event had a record-breaking high raising over $100,000. Proceeds raised from this event will be directed to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation in support of the Pediatric Cancer Research Laboratory at New York Medical College. The PCRF Laboratory is directed by Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., also director of the Children and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Diseases Center at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

This is a fun-filled day, where participants will be given the opportunity to bring their own basketball and Dribble for the Cure on a course winding through the St. John's Queens campus and ending at Carnesecca Arena. The event will kick-off with a festival featuring the St. John’s cheerleaders and band, games and refreshments, and culminate with an opportunity for photos and autographs with the players and coaches. Each participant will be asked to collect pledges for their "dribble" and will be eligible for prizes based on the amount of pledge money turned in by the date of the event. In addition, each participant will receive a Dribble for the Cure t-shirt.

About Our Organization

Our Mission

Since its establishment in 1982, PCRF has focused its efforts to improve the care, quality of life and survival rate of children with malignant diseases. The founders, comprised of parents, physicians and community leaders, joined forces to begin support of laboratory research that would translate into immediate treatment for children with cancer. Since 1982, the dedicated volunteers of PCRF have raised over $36 million for pediatric cancer research. PCRF is currently funding at 11 different institutions across the country.

Winning the Battle

  • The cancer death rate has dropped more dramatically for children than for any other age group.
  • This progress can be attributed solely to research.
  • The survival rate in certain pediatric cancers has increased from 50% to greater than 80% since 1985.
  • 80% of all funds raised by PCRF goes directly to research.

Cancer Facts

  • 1 in 330 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.
  • Each year cancer kills more children and adolescents than any other disease.
  • The incidence of cancer among children in the U.S. is rising almost 1% per year.
  • Every day, 46 young people are diagnosed with cancer.
  • Less than 4% of the money budgeted by the National Cancer Institute is directed to pediatric cancer research.

Now is the time to find a cure, the answer is very close and so much progress has been made. We just need the research to reach that finish line!
